Lange nicht mehr da gewesen, seit heute wieder im Angebot: ein Problem mit Kommunikation über Port 80 und der Fritz!Box 7390.
Alles wie gehabt, nur etwas schlimmer: auch nach einem Neustart der Fritz!Box lässt die Fritz!Box keine HTTP-Connections mehr durch. In keine Richtung – und nicht mal zu sich selbst. Das heißt, auf die Konfigurationsoberfläche der Fritz!Box kommt man auch nicht. Toll!
iChat, Skype, FTP, Mail und vermutlich noch mehr funktionieren derweil einwandfrei. Ein Traum!

Verrückt. Jetzt ist es schon wieder fast zwei Wochen her. Das zweite Kieler BarCamp. Schön war’s!
Natürlich gab’s wie bei jeder großen Veranstaltung auch in diesem Jahr das eine oder andere Problem. Einiges davon lässt sich nicht ändern, anderes werden wir (ich erlaube mir hier mal stellvertretend für’s BarCamp-Orga-Team zu sprechen) im nächsten Jahr, so es denn eine Neuauflage geben wird, angehen und verbessern.
Besonders gefreut hat mich in diesem Jahr die große Vielfalt an Themen. Im letzten Jahr hatte ich den Eindruck, dass wir größtenteils sehr spezielle Themen hatten, die sich allesamt mit den Eingeweiden von moderner IT befassten.
Dieses Jahr gab’s eine Fotosession, eine Demonstration des Makerbots, eine Session zu Rollenspielen, und und und. Ich weiß natürlich, dass das eine reine Geschmacksfrage ist. Ich finde aber, dass diese neue Vielfalt ein wichtiger Grund dafür war, dass ich mich auf dem diesjährigen BarCamp noch wohler gefühlt habe.

So, I have this strange problem…
Sometimes when I wake my MacBook Pro from sleep, it won’t re-connect to the WiFi. The WiFi symbol in the menu bar will stay grey.
I can’t even turn off WiFi via the context menu of that symbol. Also trying to manually connect with my WiFi does not work.
What works is: going to system preferences / network and turning off WiFi. This will, at first, cause the System Preferences to freeze. The window will remain in that state for about two minutes. After that time it will become responsive again and WiFi will be turned of.
At that point I can turn WiFi on again and it will connect with the WiFi instantly.
What also works is firing up a terminal and issuing the command “sudo mdnsresponder stop”. This command takes about two or three seconds to execute on my machine. After that short time, the MacBook will connect with my WiFi without any problems.
I have yet to figure out why this happens (and why my solution/work-around) works… any hints will be appreciated.
UPDATE: What I forgot to mention… when this strange behavior occurs, I can’t even start “Activity Monitor” to kill mdnsresponder. The icon will just bounce up and down in the dock forever – meaning: until the problem solves itself or until I manually kill mdnsresponder from the terminal.
UPDATE2: The problem doesn’t seem to have much to do with mdnsresponder at all. I disabled TimeMachine three days ago and didn’t run into the problem described above ever since… If you’re having the problem, please try disabling TimeMachine and comment below if this measure resulted in a “fix” for you, too…

Ohne tiefgehende Analyse, einfach nur weil es mich momentan wieder kollossal nervt ins Netz gerotzt:
Stand der Dinge heute ist:
a) Die aktuelle Labor-Fimrware (Version 84.05.04-19798) ist scheiße, weil es damit alle paar Stunden zu dem Phänomen kommt, dass sämtlicher Traffic über Port 80 (HTTP, also “das Surfen im Internet”) nur noch so langsam möglich ist, dass man sagen könnte, es sei gar nicht mehr möglich. Der Seitenaufbau von google.de dauert dann beispielsweise handgestoppte 80 Sekunden.
Derweil ist alles andere wie Mail, Usenet oder auch HTTPS (Port 81 443 [Das kommt davon wenn man sich nachts noch aufregt… Danke, Malte.]) einwandfrei möglich. Dieser Zustand hält dann jeweils für ein paar Minuten an. ISP sagt, dass es nicht an der Leitung liegt – und das glaube ich auch. AVM sagt: stabile Firmware verwenden… womit wir beim nächsten Problem wären:
b) Seit gestern ist also wieder die “latest stable” Firmware (Version 84.04.91) aus dem Hause AVM auf der Fritz!Box 7390. Seitdem konnte ich (bislang) das Problem “a)” nicht mehr feststellen. Super.
Dafür startet die Fritz!Box 7390 alle paar Stunden mal neu. Also… nicht so richtig… alle Lampen bleiben an, Verbindungen via WLAN und Kabel sind aber nicht möglich. Per Kabel angeschlossene Geräte können die FritZ!Box 7390 nicht mehr erreichen, das WLAN ist komplett weg. Nach ein paar Minuten geht’s dann wieder.
Die Fritz!Box 7390 ist nach wie vor NICHT zu empfehlen und ein einziger Witz…

UPDATE: Also works perfectly well on 10.7 Developers Preview 2 (11A419).
If you read my German articles, you probably already read that I’m by now the proud owner of a SSD which I replaced my DVD Super-Mega-Hyper-whatever-drive inside my MacBook Pro.
The Crucial RealSSD C300 does come with a chip that supports TRIM in and out of it’s own – however, Apple, so far, enabled SSD support in it’s OS X operating system only for a couple of selected SSDs. Those, those they equip their MacBooks themselves with.
This little tool called TRIM ENABLER circumvents these limitations and enables SSD TRIM support in OS X 10.6 AND 10.7 (tested it myself) for ANY SSD out there on the market. Thank you for your great work, Oskar Groth.

Mein erstes MacBook (das erste Unibody-Modell von 2008) hat ab und an noch mal ‘ne CD oder DVD zu sehen bekommen – primär wenn irgendjemand mal was gebrannt haben wollte. Oder aber für das Update auf OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Das Nachfolgegerät, ein MacBook Pro aus der Baureihe “Mid 2010″, nenne ich nun schon ein Dreivierteljahr mein Eigen und soweit ich mich erinnern kann, war da noch nie eine Plastikscheibe drin. Die sind ja auch tot.
Grund genug, sich mal ausführlich mit der Idee zu beschäftigen, dass DVD-Laufwerk durch eine zweite Festplatte zu ersetzen – und diesen Plan dann auch zu realisieren.

I just thought about the iPhone 4 now being available on Verizon and all the buzz going on in the US about switching over from AT&T.
Maybe I don’t get CDMA right… but if I do: have you ever thought about, how Verizon knocks you way back to the times when we all used dial-up modems to get online?
Think back. What happened when you were surfing the web or, “worse”, downloading a file and a call came in? Right: the internet connection was dropped immediately because the incoming call had priority.
This was not a real problem if you lived alone (you could easily unplug the phone when you needed to be online), but if you were living with family, this could become a real hassle.
Now, as far as I can see, Verizon, using CDMA, knocks you back a good 10-15 years by giving you the exact same experience. Not only that you cannot and will never be able to have a phone call and check your mails or visit a website at the same time. No, if you’re downloading an App/Movie/Album or doing something else online via “3G”, an incoming call will terminate that connection immediately. There won’t even be a question “Take Call / Stay Online”, you’re not even left with a choice.
And you certainly cannot unplug the phone (App) on your iPhone as you could have done with that real landline phone back than.
I don’t really know if this is important to anyone willing to switch… it just crossed my mind and I wanted to share that thought.

3D ist derzeit DAS Thema. Wenn man Kinobetreibern und Elektronikmärkten glaubt. Ich persönlich hab 3D immer für ganz cool aber nicht mehr als einen netten Gag gehalten.
Ich gebe zu: es ist ein ganz anderes Film-Erlebnis und ich war von Avatar und dessen Effekten wirklich begeistert. Wobei ich nicht zu sagen vermag, ob ich wirklich von den Effekten begeistert war, oder einfach nur, weil es mal was anderes war.
Auch bei Sport-Übertragungen ist 3D sicherlich ganz nett. Aber ist es ein echter Mehrwert?

Mein Bruder will seinen “alten” Computer loswerden. Der Computer wurde am 02.03.2009 von Allnet geliefert, es sind also sogar noch ein paar Monate Garantie auf alle Teile.

Lange nichts mehr dazu geschrieben… heute also ein kleines “round up”.
1. Mit der aktuellsten Labor-Firmware (84.04.85-18145) läuft die Fritz!Box 7390 nahezu stabil. Endlich. Hat ja auch bloß sechs Monate gedauert…
2. Vermutlich liegt das auch zum Teil daran, dass ich sie inzwischen auf dem Kopf liegend betreibe – damit die Abwärme nicht direkt auf die Kommode strahlt und dann in das Gerät zurück reflektiert wird. Wenn das tatsächlich Abhilfe geschafft haben sollte -> DESIGNFEHLER!
3. Telefonie ist ab und zu immer noch merkwürdig (kein Klingen und dann ist der Angerufene auf einmal dran, etc.) – könnte aber auch ein VoIP-Phänomen sein. Dann träfe AVM da keine Schuld.
4. Die VPN-Funktionalität der Fritz!Box 7390 ist wahlweise ein ganz schlechter Scherz oder eine einzige Frechheit.
5. IPv6 funktioniert. Nichts zu meckern. Verrückt, oder?
